It is said that Homer did not write his Iliad and Odyssey. However, it is believed that the poems were written by a man of the same name. If this is true, then he may have been a real person, but he could also have been an amalgamation of several people who lived in the 9th century BC. The stories told in these two epic poems include many facts about the Trojan War and its outcome.
In particular, it tells of the outcome of the war through the eyes of Greek warriors, including Achilles and Odysseus. Both Achilles and Odysseus were central characters in these works, but they would have been fictional characters back then too. Of course, both Homer and Achilles would have had to exist at some point in history to be able to write these works, but many aspects of the story might just be a combination of mythology and fiction.
Indeed, it is impossible to say for sure whether Homer actually existed or not.
